Generosity Part II
There’s something in the air.
It could be the economy. It could be my age. It could be the drives for food and backpacks. I’m not sure. But I do know that God has got a hold of me on this topic. I’m not claiming to have it figured out. But…I’m claiming to be a fellow traveler in this area of money.
This last month God whacked me with a 2×4 regarding our finances. My wife and I were listening in the car to a podcast called “Lost” from Andy Stanley at North Point Church in Atlanta. (Go to Itunes store and look up Andy Stanley). In this message Stanley gives some descriptors of what it means to be “lost” financially. Like not knowing where you are spending your money = lost. Spending more then you make = lost. Not knowing if you spend more then you make = lost. Not understanding savings and future planning = lost. These statements caught our attention. Then he makes the statement that “you can’t be a fully committed follower of Christ if you don’t know where you money is going.” I’m not positive I fully agree, but, we were convicted.
Shortly after hearing this message and agreeing that we need to get “unlost” we heard a message from a guy named Dave Ramsey. (www.daveramsey.com). He gave us practical steps to doing what we felt we should be doing in our gut and we’ve gone on to listen to multiple messages from him. In the last month, we’ve declared war on our finances with a desire to get unlost and figure out how we could be more generous.
I’m not sure this will impact anyone else out there, but it’s messed with us…in a good way. I would love it if we as a church committed to being unlost with our finances, to knowing where it comes from and where it goes, to commit to spending less then we receive and to being joyful givers.
Probably more then you wanted for one post, but it’s where we’re at today.
Have a great weekend and we’ll see you at THE BEAR!
