Psalms: Honest Prayer — Questioning Prayer

posted June 21, 2010 by eagle brook | |

The weekend of June 19/20, Senior Pastor Bob Merritt continued the Psalms series with “Questioning Prayer.”

“Why is this happening? Does God care? And if he cares, why did this sickness, loss, death or misfortune happen to me?”

Life can seem terribly unfair, and when life is unfair, it’s natural to question God’s goodness.

In Psalm 73, the writer asks these same questions, but then realizes he’s made three common mistakes.

• The mistake of comparison.

• The mistake of assumption.

• The mistake of exaggeration.

“Bitterness is the sure result of someone comparing, assuming and exaggerating,” Pastor Bob said. “Life is often unfair, but God is always faithful.”

When life is unfair, four good questions to ask are:

• Have you allowed comparison, assumption and exaggeration to cloud your perspective?

• Are you watching for the daily mercies and moments that God makes new every morning?

• Are you increasingly aware that this present life is not it? That everything in this world will eventually be washed away in exchange for an eternal life in heaven for all who believe?

• Will you begin trusting in absolute fairness of God who has a plan and a purpose for your life?

If you missed the message, it is online now.
