When the Church is ALIVE!

Hello WB friends,

I just had to send a note after the amazing weekend that we just shared together this last weekend.  I can’t ever remember feeling the emotions like I felt did this last weekend.  It was totally unexpected for me and I found myself amazed each hour how the sequence of our service wrecked me every time.  I think when it comes down to it; I realized that what happened this weekend was something that touches at the core of my purpose on this planet.  I believe what happened this weekend was an incredible display of a church that is ALIVE.  It displayed a community of people who care for each other, bring their best to God with their time and their money and rally together for a mission to reach others for Christ.  It’s really quite the picture of the Acts 2 church in which nothing can stand against.  As the service came to the final elements, watching people come forward as families, couples and individuals was incredibly powerful.  What was especially significant for me was seeing so many people that I now know their stories.  For example, up walks a family that I know is battling through a relationship with a particular family member.  Up comes a family of steady volunteers that have been committed here longer then I’ve been here, then comes a woman (at the 9) who thanks me for visiting her ½ sister in prison this last week (which stirs all sorts of emotions), then comes a couple that I married, then a family I know that is in a fight against cancer.  During the 11 when I was convinced I had myself “together” up walks a married couple that I know is facing one it’s hardest trials yet; however,  together, they dropped off their commitment.  While that’s going on, the band is melting the place with “Open Hands” and when our hearts were as open as possible to God’s work, out comes the harmonica solo reminding us of the grace that has changed our lives both on this earth and for all of eternity.  The appropriate exclamation point of “God of this City” with the images of our city signs floored me every time – even in our rehearsal.

How great to be a part of something like this.  I would love to see our financial goal attained, but more importantly is a church full of people whose hearts are fully yielded to Him and this last weekend, was one of most tangible signs I’ve seen in one sitting (or four).

Nonetheless, my family and I are off to Chicago to try to encourage Jay Cutler to get his act in gear and hang out with my folks.  In the spirit of Thanksgiving – please know how thankful I am for all of you and for this season we are sharing together as a church.

See you on the first weekend of Dec.

Don
